Health Canada says cannabis packaging must be in plain packaging with specific health warnings featured.

Health Canada has revealed its plans for legalized marijuana packaging, while small crop producers face limitations on output, according to a draft released on March 19, 2018, focusing on its plan to reduce the appeal of cannabis intake among youth.

The proposed regulations include:

  • single-color logos;
  • no metallic of fluorescent flourishes added;
  • packaging must be opaque;
  • packaging must be child-resistant and feature the same health warning boxes found on tobacco products;
  • symbols may not be larger than the government’s obligatory warning;
  • marijuana packages can only display one brand element beyond the product’s name;
  • must list % of active ingredient, such as THC and cannabidiol.

As well, Health Canada says it proposes to license micro growers, but only if their crop area is no larger than 2,150 square feet (200 square meters).

While Canada has yet to officially pass the bill to legalize marijuana, the proposed rules released by Health Canada on March 19, 2018 was seen as a “heads up” for companies looking to sell cannabis and cannabis-related products.

While it is expected to pass and be put into effect sometime in 2018, no specific date has actually been set for the legalization of marijuana in Canada.
